The club offers a number of opportunities to learn to sail.
Start Sailing Courses
WBBC offers ‘Start Sailing’ courses for those with limited or no sailing experience. The courses are professionally run by Yachting New Zealand qualified coaches. The courses are the first step in the Yachting New Zealand Learn to Sail pathway. Participants who successfully complete the courses are awarded a ‘Start Sailing’ certificate.
These courses are for those with limited or no sailing experience. They are professionally run by Yachting New Zealand qualified instructors who are usually members of the club.
After Start Sailing
The club’s aim is to encourage participants to continue sailing at WBBC. After completing one of the learn-to-sail courses participants may join the club and use the club facilities and Optimists or Sunbursts for the remainder of the season at a reduced membership rate of $60 for juniors and $110 for seniors. This provides full membership until 31st May 2017, and enables juniors to participate in Optisquad on Saturday mornings, and seniors to join in club racing. Please note that the club optimists and sunbursts are for members only unless sailing under instruction during a sailing programme offered by WBBC.
‘Have a Go’ day
Occasionally the club gives members of the public the opportunity to have a go at sailing under the guidance of an experienced club member – in an Optimist for children or a Sunburst for adults. This is free of charge. The date for Have a Go day is set closer to the time.
Schools introduction to sailing
This is an annual programme organised by WBBC, generally run in early December. Senior primary and intermediate school students in the eastern suburbs are offered an opportunity to experience half a day’s introduction to sailing. They sail at Worser Bay using club optimists.
This programme allows a large number of children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to experience sailing free of charge. Special programmes can also be delivered by prior arrangement.
