'Start Sailing' as a child
We love helping kids discover the joy of sailing and the confidence that comes from being out on the water. Our Start Sailing programme is designed for children aged 8–14 who are new to sailing or have limited experience.

About the Event
How It Works
If you would like to learn to sail during the term. The 'start sailing as a child' programme runs alongside our Opti Squad during term 1 and term 4 each year. The goal is for your child to complete Level 1 of Yachting New Zealand's start sailing programme with our coaches. This will give you three sessions to work with our Yachting New Zealand-qualified coaches. This programme runs on Saturday mornings, 9.00 am - 12.00 pm, during Term 4 (2026) and Term 1 (2027).
The club provides plastic Optimist dinghies (Optis) and buoyancy vests for all sessions.
Who Can Join
Children aged 8–14 years at the start of the course
Able to swim 50 metres unaided while wearing a buoyancy aid and sailing gear
