Worser Bay Boating Club - Hosts for the Toyota Optimist Nationals 2009

WBBC hosted the annual Optimist Nationals in 2009 over the Easter break. The Optimist Nationals attracts the largest single class fleet in New Zealand every year. For 2009 the numbers that actually competed were:

  • 190 Open Fleet sailors
  • 58 Green Fleet sailors

A total of 248 Sailors plus their families and supporters made this a huge event. Sailors ages ranged from 8 years to 15 years.

It was a fantastic event. The weather played ball and we had 5 days of great sailing with enough variation in wind strength to play to give both heavy wind favoured sailors and light wind favoured sailors a decent shot at winning. Due to our unique location, supporters could actually view their sailors racing from the comfort of the club premises.

The event was made possible by the magnificent effort from club member volunteers, friends of the club and volunteers from other clubs in the region and NZIODA. It attracted sponsorship and support from Wellington City Council and the main sponsor as in previous years was Toyota (many thanks to Toyota).

We hope the videos to the right (thanks to Bruce Jones for creating the clips and shooting the footage) gives a good indication of what it was like to be there.

For more information about the event, the event web site is still available with the results and photos and other interesting items.
