The Optimist Sailing Dinghy

The Optimist is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy intended for use by children up to the age of 15. Nowadays boats are usually made of fiber reinforced plastic, although wooden boats are still built.

It is one of the most popular sailing dinghies in the world, with over 140,000 boats officially registered with the class and many more built but never registered[1].

The Optimist is recognized as an International Class by the International Sailing Federation.

At Worser Bay we have an active learn to sail programme for Juniors who then go on to race at our club and become very proficient sailors by the time they are ready to move to a Starling. National and International competition and opportunity is available in this class and an active support network at the club ensures that our sailors are among the best.

NZIODA Optimist Nationals 2009 at

Worser Bay Boating Club

WBBC hosted the Opti Nats in 2009 at Easter. It was a very successful event with excellent sailing for the whole 5 days with a variation of wind that evened out the fleet.
