Junior & Youth coaching/training

For juniors who have completed a Learn to Sail course. See Sailing Development section for further information. Optisquad is co-ordinated by Greg Wright, phone 380-9429.

OptiSquad

Juniors who have completed a learn to sail course can further develop their sailing skills with Optisquad. Qualified instructors provide coaching which is fully funded from Hebtro Trophy funds. Newcomers without a boat may use the club Optimists for half of the season, after which they will need their own boat, as others will be using the club boats.

Training is provided using the NZYA training programme.

Optisquad Levels 1, 2 and 3 are run on Saturday mornings (refer Sailing Program for further details).

OptiSquad Levels 1 & 2

For Optimist sailors with limited experience. Sailors in this group will progress to Level 3 once they are able to sail around a triangular course without too much assistance.

OptiSquad Level 3

For those sailors who are now ready to learn how to sail faster and try out their skills in short races whilst also having heaps of fun.

The coaching programme includes:

  1. Fully subsidised midweek coaching, generally Thursday afternoon at the club,

  3. Fitness/nutrition, biomechanics and mental skills (in partnership with the New Zealand Academy of Sport and Wellington City Council).

TUESDAY & Thursday NIGHT COACHING PROGRAMME

All junior and youth sailors are encouraged to attend the after school coaching progammes held on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Training will be varied to suit the conditions but will be in the form of specific drills to upskill the various elements of sailing: sailing techniques, boat handling skills, tacking, gybing, mark rounding, starts, racing and rules. Tuesday and Thursday night coaching is fun and essential for sailors serious about improving their skills.

Series Races

These will be held over 10 Saturdays - 5 days prior to Christmas and 5 days after Christmas. A total of 15 races will be sailed in the overall series for each class with the best 10 results couting to a sailor’s final position. Series events are listed in the sailing program.

On Saturday mornings where there are no series races, regattas or regional clinics, a coaching programme will be run, incorporating racing. On mornings where there is no race squad coaching or when race squad sailors are away from the club, general handicap races may also be run.
