At the club

Zephyr01The Zephyr was designed by Des Townson in 1956 as “a pretty little boat which would be “reasonably fast”. It has become a popular class at WBBC and seen by many as the boat of choice.

Our last Nationals were held at Lyttelton and in the fleet of 60, we enjoyed the company of nearly 20 Wellington members, accomodated in caravans at the local club. Our fleet did very well at prize giving, but did not quite achieve the big trophy.

Our Zephyr fleet is expanding at such a rate, boats can’t be built quickly enough to meet demand! They are an investment. To meet the demand for new boats we have a local boat builder ready and keen to start production. We just need to extract the mould from Auckland and a midnight raid is under consideration.

Zephyr02Although gentle to sail, the Zephyr requires a little more energy to go fast. Thus we have a very competitive group in our Red Fleet and a more social Gold Card Fleet whose sailors sometimes do their best at the de-briefing. We have two races each Saturday. The first a handicap start allows the more social sailors to lead the fleet around the course, the second is more for those looking for prizes. For a good handicap, Maurice Scott can adjust your start time for a consideration.

We are keen to help anyone join our fleet, and pleased to help anyone procure a boat. Our President, Richard Dreverman, speaks Australian and if you listen long enough offers good advice. Contact him on 027 561 7715 if you would like to know more about our fleet. To learn more about the Zephyr the Association website is http://www.zephyr.org.nz.

The Wellington Zephyr sailors have an excllent website. Check out Zephyrs of Wellington.
