At the club
The Sunburst is a nationally recognised class that continues to have a strong senior fleet following at Worser Bay. There is a good market of 2nd hand boats in various price ranges and after participating in an Adult Learn to Course in the club owned fibreglass Sunbursts many decide to continue in the class and pit their skills aginst some of the long standing Sunbursters at the club. As the predominant two handed boat at the club the Sunburst is an ideal boat for parent-child, husband-wife, “two old mates”, or just about any other combination of skipper and crew.
The NZ Sunburst Association (www.sunburst.org.nz) has a strong New Zealand-wide membership. It produces a worthy newsletter and is involved in the organisation of enjoyable regattas. The association has active regional branches such as the Wellington Branch – Chairman Keith Fraser (HBC member), Secretary Greg Scott firstname.lastname@example.org (WBBC).
The local branch runs a full program of events each season and trophies are awarded in many divisions including line, handicap and scouting.

About the class
The Sunburst is a two-handed, 3.5m centreboard sailing dinghy. It was designed in the late 1960s in New Zealand by John Balmain Brooke, where it was to become one of the most popular classes of boat. It is popular as a craft for teaching beginner sailors, and is actively raced in New Zealand.
Although designed as a two person boat, a Sunburst can easily be sailed by a single person in light to moderate conditions using just the mainsail only, or mainsail and jib. The Sunburst is usually rigged with a mainsail, jib and spinnaker. Construction is of wood or fiberglass, with a minimum hull weight of 77kg. National Regattas are held Annually
